First public workshop of the FAROS project
The first public workshop of FAROS will take place in London on 17 and 18th September. Different presentations will be conducted around the following themes:• Human element factors in shipping safety • Effect of environment and design on crew performance • Virtual reality and bridge simulator experiments • Role of the human element in maritime accidents CIS GALICIA will participate as a speaker in one of the technical sessions. CIS GALICIA participates in the European project FAROS
FAROS is an EC FP7 funded, three year project to develop an approach to incorporate human factors into Risk-Based Design of ships. The project consortium consists of 12 members including industry, academia and research institutes.FAROS will use experimental data, simulations, parametric ship design models and optimisation processes to integrate human factors into the ship design process at a conceptual stage. This will include global and local ship design factors features. The main role of CIS GALICIA is focused on the development of virtual reality (VR) simulations. Different scenarios of a Ro-Pax vessel will be simulated. In one of the scenarios the engine room will be represented and it will be assessed the effect of different passage widths to the proximity to hazards that may be dangerous in a given time. The second stage is related to the study of the dangers associated to watertight doors. Different deck layouts will be simulated. During the Virtual Reality experiments the engineers will perform specific tasks that require crossing different numbers of gates according to different layouts. The first set of VR experiments is planned for September 2013 in Ferrol. Twenty-four Chief Engineers and Chief Officers will participate in the experiments and they will be evaluated by psychological researchers of the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow). The experiments will be conducted in two six day blocks, testing twelve Engineers per block. CAVE and head mounted display (HMD) immersive platforms will be used and also the VR simulations developed. All information about the FAROS project: www.faros-project.eu
Technology transfer event
CIS Galicia, as a partner of the consortium Galactea-Plus of the Enterprise Europe Network conducted last January 30, an event about technology transfer and strategies to convert research into industrial products and services. This event aimed to present, with the collaboration of different Galician R&D&I agents, instruments and tools through which research results can be disseminated so that they can reach industry and market. During the event, it was highlighted the important role of the Enterprise Europe Network to promote transnational technology transfer.
Workshops about virtual and augmented reality.
In late November 2012, CIS Galicia gave five workshops about Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality for SME, organized by Red.es and CDTIC (Centro Demostrador TIC de Galicia) in Santiago de Compostela.- Workshop 1: "Applications of virtual reality and augmented reality for SME" , 26th November, from 10:00 to 14:00. Miguel Río Bujía - Workshop 2: "Introduction to the creation of Virtual Reality applications" , 27th November, from 10:00 to 14:30. Miguel Río Bujía - Workshop 3: "Creating Virtual Reality 3D content" , 28th November, from 10:00 to 14:30. Lucía Rodríguez Quiroga - Workshop 4: "Virtual Reality on the web. Unity3D ", 29th November, from 10:00 to 14:30. Ángel Casas Polo - Workshop 5: "Generation of Augmented Reality applications" , 30th November, from 10:00 to 14:30. Ángel Casas Polo In the different workshops it was explained the process of identification, analysis, content creation and generation of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality simulations, showing case studies and applications. |
